Field Operations Technician Level 4

Performs a full range of work involving the installation, turn up, testing and activation of various types of telecommunications platforms, supporting components, racks/cabinets, overhead ladder systems, fiber ducting, and DC distribution equipment with an emphasis on optical hardware and interconnects.

This role supports subsea, long-haul, regional, and metro carrier’s domestic and international customers.

Responsibilities:

Field Operations Technician Level 4 is expected to work autonomously and supervise the implementation. Can expect to be placed on project assignments where any combination of the following tasking could be expected:

Infrastructure installation and de-installation

Racks

Ironwork (ladder rack, subfloor infrastructure)

Cable management

  • Fiber & copper management systems (i.e. Panduit raceway, Fiber Management Systems (FMS))
  • DC Power cable (determining path, wax cord lacing)
  • Cable Terminations, cleaning and testing
  • Fiber Optic Cable (light levels, scoping)
  • RJ45
  • Coaxial/BNC
  • Grounding
  • HTAP
  • Equipment

 

Installation of cabling DC power distribution systems

  • Basic configuration and provisioning of equipment
  • Ciena/Nortel 6500, Ciena Waveserver
  • IP Routers/Switches
  • Advanced configuration and provisioning of DWDM equipment
  • Ciena 6500 SDN
  • Ciena 6500 ILA alarm clearing.
  • Conduct Ground Testing
  • Perform and report on fiber quality assessment both in-house and cross-base to include OPM and ORL readings.
  • Conduct Bit Error Rate Testing (BERT), OSA captures and OTDR analysis.

 

Documentation Responsibilities

Use of Microsoft Office suite of products for:

  • Requirements review and comprehension.
  • Redlining
  • Reporting
  • Daily Status Report (DSR) submission
  • Site Completion Report (SCR) submission
  • Survey Reports
  • Installation of cabling DC power distribution systems

Qualifications:

Required Experience

Knowledge of communications installations.

Working knowledge and troubleshooting experience with various network devices (i.e., optical DWDM nodes, IP routers, optical/IP switches, etc.) from multiple manufacturers and possess the skill and expertise necessary to install these network devices per the Implementation Standards.

Work with Fiber Optic, SONET, Ethernet and SDH related test equipment including OTDR, PMD, CD, Optical Spectrum Analyzer, BER Test Sets, Sniffers.

Business communications skills including verbal, written, and graphic should be present, as should exposure to a customer service environment where discretion and professional demeanor are commonplace.

 

Be capable of performing as the Installation Supplier’s in-charge person.

Shall be able to work independently on upgrades and routine installation efforts, with minimal oversight on large installations. Responsibilities may also be assigned for providing training or guidance to other technicians in the completion of assigned work.

 

Be capable of performing additions, removals, and modifications on working equipment and circuits.

  • Support remote test and turn-up activities.
  • Execute local ATP and workbook testing procedures.
  • Fluent in English language.

 

Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of:

At least three years of experience involving the construction, maintenance, or repair of various types of telecommunications or electronics equipment or an equivalent combination of education and experience, substituting completion of an accredited vocational or technical curriculum in telecommunications or a related discipline for the required or an equivalent combination of education and experience for one year only of the required experience. Additionally, a current certification for Ciena 6500 Broadband and Photonic Layer OAM&P is required to fulfil the responsibilities associated with turn up, test, and activation of the Ciena DWDM platforms.

 

Special Requirements/Security Clearance:

  • Ability to obtain a Secret security clearance.
  • Willingness to travel 70% – 80% of the time with other team members to meet installation assignment requirements.

 

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to set up and ascend/descend ladders as necessary to reach overhead cabling and components undergoing installation or deinstallation.
  • Ability to get down under sub-flooring as required to reach components and cabling.
  • Ability to lift at least 50 lbs
